Political Law
Nationally recognized leaders on the laws governing the political process.
Engagement in the political process in the United States is a bedrock right and responsibility. It is also highly regulated. We serve as trusted advisors to companies, organizations, and individuals subject to the laws governing political speech and electoral spending.
The creative pioneer of modern political law, Perkins Coie is home to one of the oldest, most respected political law practices in the country. For decades, we have served as legal advisors in some of the most consequential matters in the country. Fortune 100 companies, nonprofit 501(c) organizations, U.S. presidential candidates, governors, members of Congress and congressional candidates, lobbying firms, and other law firms are among the clients who have turned to Perkins Coie for their leading-edge work.
We represent clients in virtually every aspect of the political law process—from day-to-day advice to guidance on strategic projects and litigation and dispute-resolution—in their efforts to effectively engage in political activity. Our lawyers distinguish themselves in their broader, big-picture perspectives of the political system and depth of understanding of client needs.
Our voting rights litigation practice is unique among law firms. Recognizing that politics and political law extend beyond Washington, D.C., we have established a national footprint of lawyers, with the toughest litigation often happening at the state and local level. We have also advised on recounts in multiple states, including Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina.
At all levels of government, we assist clients in campaign finance, legal advice and compliance, lobbying compliance, and various ethics-related rules. Our regular representation of clients before the Federal Election Commission includes issues related to rulemaking, advisory opinions, and enforcement processes. We represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service in the tax-exempt application process, in tax disputes, and during audits. We counsel daily on compliance with the Lobbying Disclosure Act (LDA) and prepare and submit LDA filings for clients who opt for that service. We also advise regularly on the Foreign Agents Registration Act and prepare and file those reports as well.
